Horses deserve better than racing

I am very disappointed to learn that live horse racing will return to Colonial Downs in 2019. It is heartbreaking to know that because of this decision many horses will die as a result of injury or being sent to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico when they are no longer a viable source of income for their owners.

It is a shame that New Kent Economic Development director Matthew Smolnik can’t envision a less cruel endeavor to put New Kent on the map. The centuries-old tradition of horse racing deserves to die; the horses don’t.
