I don’t have a list of things I want to receive during the holidays, but I do have some things I want to happen as gifts for others.
» I want the Tourism Council of the Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance to set aside a portion of the tax revenue generated from SB 942 — remember the 1 percent sales tax imposed on nearly everything? — to provide a special fund for low-wage employees in our hospitality/tourism and retail industries to receive financial support for professional and personal needs. That would cover about 94 percent of the workforce.
» I want the City of Williamsburg to join Alexandria and Richmond, and very soon, Charlottesville and Fredericksburg, in establishing a Living Wage Certification program to recognize businesses that pay fair and equitable wages.
» I want senators to stand up and lead the way for the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.
» I want the College of William and Mary to stop accepting financial gifts from individuals who do not believe in the worth and dignity of all people and to refuse to make decisions influenced by such persons.
» I want African-American children, youths and adults to be treated with dignity and respect and to be included in equitable educational, economic and employment outcomes.
» I want Mother Earth and all her creatures to receive respect, care and protection.
» I want individuals and families from other countries to be safe and included within the borders and communities of our nation.
» I want peace and love to prevail.
