No surprise there are so many DUI arrests

There was a well-written article in the Gazette Jan. 30 by Steve Roberts Jr. about Williamsburg and the surrounding counties having high DUI numbers.

I do not know the exact amount of breweries, distilleries, meaderies, wineries, hotel lounges, restaurants, country clubs, our local theme park and outdoor festivals that encourage drinking or are about drinking. House parties are numerous, and the grocery stores have fabulous wine departments.

Our Tourism Council rightly promotes activities, so many of which include buying a brew, a bottle of wine, or bring your own to an outdoor concert.

The breweries bring food trucks to their sites to entice more patrons. We have tastings galore, and one pub downtown has more than 100 beers. Good food, but wow! More than 100 different beers. (I was so astounded, I counted the list.)

So why are we surprised that we have a high DUI arrests?

We are a sociable community. The opportunities are here to imbibe on any level. The opportunities are also here to be cautious.

Make good decisions and be glad our police are in place to keep us safe.
