Charo Aguilar of Poquoson and Brenda Wexel of Virginia Beach won the 8.5-rated main-draw championship Wednesday as the annual women’s doubles Charity Tennis Classic wrapped up with the finals in the 8.5 and 7.0 draws at Kingsmill.

The tournament was relocated hastily from W&M’s McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, which was planned to be used as a hurricane evacuation shelter. Several teams were not available due to storm evacuations, according to tournament director Karen Johnson, but the tournament raised $60,000 for the Avalon shelter, CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocate), Latisha’s House and FBOSP, she said.

Amid Hurricane Florence’s move toward the East Coast, this event was one of the few sports events that went on in the area Tuesday and Wednesday.

The tournament organizers and participants had to move their setup out of the M-NTC at 7 p.m. Monday and get ready to go Tuesday morning at Kingsmill, which they accomplished.
