Tribe climbs to No. 7 in FCS polls; U.Va. gains No. 1 women’s soccer seed; CAA puts four in, including W&M

William and Mary (7-2) was ranked seventh in the latest FCS STATS poll, climbing five notches after dominating Elon 34-13 Saturday. Richmond fell four spots to ninth after a 30-25 loss at New Hampshire, while James Madison stayed 14th.

Tribe sophomore DeVonte Dedmon, a Warhill High graduate, was named the Colonial Athletic Association Special Teams Player of the Week. He returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown at Elon. …

Virginia kicker Ian Frye was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Specialist of the Week.

Women’s soccer:

The 64-team NCAA Division I tournament includes 2014 runner-up Virginia as one of its four No. 1 seeds and Virginia Tech as one of its four No. 4s. It also includes a record four entries from the Colonial Athletic Association.

U.Va. (16-1-2) won’t have to leave Charlottesville’s Klockner Stadium until the College Cup semifinals, which are in Cary, N.C. The Cavaliers first will face Howard (13-7-2) on Friday, with the winner of that match to take on the UNC Wilmington-South Carolina victor.

Virginia Tech (14-3-2) will play host to Cincinnati (13-5-5) at 7 p.m. Saturday in Blacksburg, with the Hokies or Bearcats advancing to duel the Ohio State-Butler winner.

William and Mary (14-4-2), which squandered a two-goal halftime lead and lost 3-2 Sunday to James Madison in the CAA tournament field, earned a berth at 7 p.m. Saturday in Orlando at Central Florida (12-6-1). Second-seeded Florida faces Western Michigan in the other game in the pod.

JMU (14-6-2) was sent to Durham, N.C., to play No. 3 seed Duke (10-5-4) in a grouping that also includes South Florida and Florida Gulf Coast.

Regular-season champion Hofstra and UNCW joined JMU and the Tribe also qualified from the CAA. The Pride will meet Georgetown.

Big South tournament champion Liberty will play Friday at No. 3 seed North Carolina, the sport’s all-time winningest program. Texas A&M and Washington will play in the other game in the group. …

In the women’s Division III tournament, reigning champion Lynchburg (19-2-1) will face Babson (14-3-4) on Saturday. The Hornets are the only program from Virginia in the field of 64.

Women’s volleyball:

CNU, ranked sixth in Division III, was assigned to Stockton University in Galloway, N.J., for an eight-team regional from Friday through Sunday.

The Captains, who have won the title in five of their last six regional appearances, first face Hunter at 3 p.m. Friday. The other first-round contests are Old Dominion Athletic Conference champion Randolph-Macon vs. Stevenson (Md.) at 12:30, Eastern vs. Cabrini in an all-Pennsylvania clash at 5:30 and Gallaudet at Stockton at 8.

Mary Washington, a CAC rival of the Captains, gained an at-large berth and will face Case Western Reserve of Ohio at 5:30 p.m. Friday in Huntingdon, Pa.

Women’s basketball:

Lady Walker and Kiana Johnson scored 29 points apiece to lift Virginia Union to a 94-91 overtime win over Norfolk State in an exhibition Monday night at Echols Hall.

Walker’s jumper in the paint with 1:07 left in regulation tied the game at 83. NSU had several chances to go ahead on its next possession, but missed six straight shots before Division II VUU finally grabbed the rebound. Johnson missed a 3-pointer just before the regulation buzzer that also would have won the game.

In OT, Brehanna Daniels’ layup with 57 seconds left gave the Spartans their last lead, 91-90. Walker answered with a basket in the lane, and after two NSU misses, Walker leaked out for a layup just before the final buzzer.

Daniels and Kayla Roberts scored 19 points apiece to lead five Spartans in double figures. Roberts had a team-high 20 rebounds for NSU, which outrebounded VUU 61-45. Siobhan Beslow also had a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. …

Christopher Newport changed its women’s basketball opener against Washington and Lee to 2 p.m. Sunday. That way, it will be right before the men’s opener against Lynchburg at 4.
