Football:

Fletcher Whalen’s 35-yard field goal on the game’s final play Thursday gave Warhill (5-2, 3-2 Bay Rivers District) a 17-14 victory at York (6-2, 5-2) in a clash of likely playoff teams at Bailey Field.

After the Class 3 Falcons tied the score at 14 with 3:42 remaining on John Michael Cassidy’s 1-yard touchdown run and Zach Eagle’s second PAT, the Class 4 Lions drove 62 yards to set up Whalen. Noah Holmes ran four times for 34 yards on that drive.

Cassidy ran for 114 yards, while Warhill’s Michael Akpan ran for 114, including a 94-yard TD in the second quarter. ...

Host Poquoson (6-1, 5-1 Bay Rivers) breezed past Bruton 58-0, scoring 44 first-quarter points and getting junior-varsity players plenty of action.

Marc Gresham rushed for four touchdowns and accounted for 206 all-purpose yards to help King William (6-1) defeat Blue Ridge 52-16 in Dyke, near Charlottesville.

In a rare feat, three Cavaliers rushed for more than 100 yards.

Gresham had 104 yards on 14 carries, returned two kickoffs for 96 yards and made a 6-yard catch -- the only part of the Cavaliers' 482 yards of offense that weren't on the ground.

Kolbe Jorgenson ran for 152 yards and three scores on 20 carries, and Travis Gilbertson had 156 yards on nine carries.

Kolby Anderson interecepted two passes, and Keamon Bishop picked off one.
