Daily Press

Boys basketball:

Peninsula Catholic and Walsingham Academy easily advanced to the final of the season-opening Walsingham Thanksgiving Tournament.

PC defeated Hampton Christian Academy 78-47 Friday behind Malachi Banks' 20 points, Titus Lawrence's 15 and AJ Baker's 14.

For HCA, Marcellus Mencarini and Kendon Peebles had 11 points each.

Walsingham cruised past Veritas 83-34 as Marcus Banks had 27 points and Cooper Jones 13 for the Trojans.

Veritas will meet HCA at 2 p.m. Saturday for third place, followed by the title game at 3:30.

Football:

Behind quarterback Xander Jedlick, Ocean Lakes (13-0) beat defending champion Oscar Smith 21-7 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex to capture the Class 6 Region A title.

Oscar Smith went ahead on Joe Bray's 5-yard touchdown run with 1:45 left in the first quarter. The Dolphins pulled even with 9:17 left in the second quarter on Jedlick's touchdown run, which immediately followed a punt return to the Tigers' 3 by Shawn Hamilton.

Jedlick then hit Tayvion "Tank" Land with a 41-yard TD pass with 1:40 left in the second quarter to put Ocean Lakes ahead 14-7. Jedlick's 35-yard TD pass to Hamilton with 6:44 left in the game proved to be the clincher.

Ocean Lakes will stay in the area — possibly at the Sportsplex again — for next weekend’s state semifinal against Manchester, which ousted top-seeded Colonial Forge 21-7 in a clash of unbeaten teams. ...

In the Class 5 Region A final, Maury upended host Indian River 42-21, the top seed, in Chesapeake.

Two touchdown passes by Alvonte Lawson and CJ Beasley’s 4-yard run put the Commodores ahead 21-0 with 4:22 left in the second quarter, and they withstood a second-half rally by the Braves.
