Albon Yowell of Jamestown will meet Turner Cole of Hanover in an intriguing 10 a.m. Class 4 semifinal at Roanoke College.
Yowell won his singles match in Hanover’s team win over the Eagles last week, but he didn’t play against Cole, who was nursing an ankle injury but came in for doubles.
Yowell will pair up with teammate Jordan DeBerry in Friday’s doubles semifinal, also at Roanoke College.
In the Class 3 semis at Roanoke College, York’s Rishit Patel will try to upset James Monroe’s Marshall Wood, who beat him during the Falcons’ team win Tuesday.
Grafton‘s Class 4 state semifinal against Chancellor was moved to 10 a.m. Friday at Salem High.
York junior tennis star Natasha Novak looks like the favorite in Thursday’s state Class 3 girls singles tournament at Roanoke College.
Making her third state appearance, the Region 3A champion plays at 10 a.m. against 3B champ Haley Caspersen of James Monroe — whom Novak shut out 6-0, 6-0 Tuesday despite JM’s 5-1 team semifinal victory over the Falcons.
If Novak wins, her opponent in the 1 p.m. final well could be Reagan Delp of Roanoke’s Cave Spring High, a Christopher Newport recruit Novak beat in last year’s semifinals.
In the Class 4 semis, also at Roanoke College at 10 a.m., Grafton freshman Anna Murphy will face a semifinal challenge from Eastern View’s McKinley Smith.
Murphy, the only player to beat Novak in singles this season, is a 2-star player, according to Tennis Recruiting Network, while Smith and Novak are 3-stars.
