Walsingham sophomore commits to Hokies for baseball

Walsingham Academy sophomore baseball player Tanner Schobel committed to play baseball at Virginia Tech.

Schobel, who plays multiple positions for the Trojans, hit .319 last spring with a home run and 30 RBIs.

As NFL rosters were trimmed following the end of preseason games Thursday night, some players with local ties were among those waived this weekend.

They included: former Bruton High running back Lorenzo Taliaferro by the Baltimore Ravens, former Old Dominion quarterback Taylor Heinicke by the Minnesota Vikings, rookie tackle Jerry Ugokwe of William and Mary by the New Orleans Saints, rookie fullback Sam Rogers by the Los Angeles Rams and former Richmond Spiders running back Tim Hightower by the San Francisco 49ers.
