Rochard tosses 1-hitter; Jamestown improves to 7-2 in baseball and softball

Warhill emerged as the only unbeaten in Bay Rivers District softball with a 4-1 win Friday at Tabb.

Keely Rochard pitched a one-hitter for the Lions, giving up only an infield single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, and benefited from the power hitting of two freshman teammates.

Freshman outfielder Daja Wallace broke a scoreless tie with one out in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run to left field, driving in catcher Jasmine Ortiz. Ortiz had doubled.

Freshman shortstop Taylor Nicholson added two more runs for the Lions (9-0, 8-0 district entering Tuesday) with a double down the left-field line in the seventh.

That was plenty for Virginia Tech-bound senior Rochard. She struck out 10, had only one ball hit to the outfield and received solid defensive support.

Jamestown 3, Grafton 1: The Eagles (7-2 entering Tuesday) scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning Friday to defeat Grafton 3-1.

Ariana Reynolds led Jamestown with three hits and an RBI and Madalyn Morton got the win on the mound.

Lafayette 8, Bruton 1: The Rams were led Friday by Chase Bauer's 3-for-4 (RBI) performance at the plate to help his own cause on the mound. He struck out six in the winning effort.

Nate Coley, Chase Smith and Sutton Perozek each had a pair of RBIs for the Rams and Darian Brooks accounted for Bruton's lone RBI.

Jamestown 9, Grafton 1: Matt Lansford had a big day at the plate for the Eagles (7-2 entering Tuesday) with a 4-for-4 (RBI) performance.
