Tribe host Hofstra in CAA opener

William and Mary will open Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday in a matchup against a 7-5 Hofstra team that has lost its last two matchups.

The Tribe, 5-0 at home, has been humming offensively and is among the top 12 in 3-point (second at 45.9), free throw (fourth at 80.1) and field goal (12th at 51.5) percentages. W&M is the only team in the country to rank among the top 20 in all three shooting categories.

Still, Hofsta is no slouch. The Pride put up 100 or more points twice this year in wins over Bishop’s University and Molloy College while scoring 99 against Concordia. The Tribe eclipsed the century mark three times this year during wins over Shenandoah, Marshall and Milligan.

W&M will look to stop the Pride’s Justin Wright-Foreman, who leads the team with 278 points. He’s also leading the team in field goal attempts (235) and 3-pointers attempted (113). Wright-Foreman also leads the team in minutes played and turnovers. The Tribe’s big men will need to put a body on 6-foot, 9-inch Rokas Gustys, a Lithuanian import who leads Hofstra with 126 rebounds.

Meanwhile, Hofstra will have its hands full guarding the Tribe’s leading scorer Nathan Knight, who has averaged 18.7 points through the first 11 games. Five W&M players are averaging double-digit point totals this season, including sophomore Justin Pierce who is also leading the team with 101 rebounds.

Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday at Kaplan Arena.
