Former Tribe hoops player inks pro contract in Europe

Former William and Mary star Omar Prewitt signed his first pro contract, agreeing to play for BC Siauliai in Lithuania's top league, becoming the 15th player under Tribe coach Tony Shaver to sign a professional contract.

Prewitt is fifth all-time for William and Mary in scoring (1,831), 11th in assists (320) and 13th in rebounds (640).

Prewitt joins 2008 William and mary graduate Laimis Kisielius in Lithuania. Kisielius, a Lithuania native, recently inked a two-year deal with Neptunas.

Academic excellence

William and Mary’s baseball, women’s track and field and men’s golf programs each received the Colonial Athletic Association’s inaugural Team Academic Excellence Awards.

The awards recognize the institution with the highest collective GPA in all 22 sports sponsored by the CAA. William and Mary ranked third among league programs behind Drexel and Hofstra.

The Tribe’s baseball program was one of 38 Division I programs and the only one from the state of Virginia to receive the American Baseball Coaches Association Team Academic Excellence Award, posting a team GPA of nearly 3.3.

The William and Mary women's track and field program took home the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team award with a GPA of 3.36 and the men's golf team posted the top team GPA at William and Mary with a 3.53 and was one of 19 Division I programs to earn the President's Special Recognition award by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Former William and Mary offensive lineman Jerry Ugokwe was claimed off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts by the New Orleans Saints on Thursday.

Ugokwe went undrafted this year after earning third-team All-American FCS honors.

The Tribe kick off preseason camp on Monday and open the season at Virginia Sept. 2.
