Christopher Newport University outfielder Tommy Vitaletti has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association Division III National Player of the Week after an explosive start to his senior season.
The Jamestown graduate was also named Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week and selected to the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week after batting .700 in the Captains’ first five games with six extra-base hits. He’s the first CNU player to claim National Player of the Week honors since 2005.
Vitaletti ranks first nationally among hitters with at least 10 at-bats while boasting a 1.250 slugging percentage (third nationally) and a .750 on-base percentage (fourth nationally).
His 12 RBIs puts him fourth nationally and first in the CAC.
The highlight so far was an 8-RBI performance against Rutgers-Newark with a pair of home runs, becoming just the second CNU player to have 8 RBIs in a game.
Vitaletti’s offensive productivity hasn’t been limited to his bat; He’s a perfect 7-for-7 stealing bases.
Vitaletti is in his second season with CNU after transferring from George Mason University. Last year, he was first-team all-conference and earned second-team American Baseball Coaches Association and D3baseball.com all-region distinction.
The Captains will be back in action Friday at home against Susquehanna University.
