Jamestown girls hang on to win Conference 18 title

The Jamestown girls almost allowed victory to slip away against Heritage, 35-33, in their C-18 final.

The Eagles had held the lead since the first minute of the game, but with less than a minute to go, Heritage sophomore Rheality Webb stole the ball and took it for a breakaway layup to tie the score.

On the ensuing Jamestown possession, the Hurricanes stopped two scoring chances, but with 15 seconds left, Eagles freshman Corynthian Williams hit a long 2-point jumper to provide what would be the winning shot.

No. 2 seed Jamestown held on for the win over No. 5 Heritage and claimed the tournament championship.

"No one was thinking we had a chance to do anything at the beginning of the year, but before the game, I showed them all the teams we've beat on our way up the ladder," Jamestown coach Mary Glisan said. "We needed to believe that we could win."

After the game, conference trophy in hand, the Eagles turned that sentiment into a rallying cry, cheering as a team: "Believe!" Now they hope to carry their momentum forward into the 4A East regional tournament.

Jamestown will host its first-round game in the regional tournament Tuesday. Heritage will travel to Wilson in Portsmouth.
