New junior golf invitational to precede annual Kingsmill LPGA event

A new invitational golf tournament will precede the LPGA Kingsmill Championship in May.

The Kingsmill Championship Junior Invitational will be contested May 14-15 on the River Course before the annual LPGA event commences May 19, Kingsmill and the Middle Atlantic PGA announced Tuesday.

The new invitational competition will feature a boys and girls division as well as a 36-hole stroke play event with the course set up in similar fashion to the LPGA tourney.

“We are always looking for new ways to give back to the game and involve the next generation of golfers in our event,” Matthew Schulze, the PGA tournament director for the Kingsmill Championship, said in a release. “We look forward to seeing these juniors on site just a few days before the best women in the world participate in the Kingsmill Championship.”

The field of 60 will be invited based on Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings for Virginia and Maryland as well as select Middle Atlantic PGA junior tournaments.

The Middle Atlantic PGA Spring Fling tourney, set for March 24-25 at Chantilly National Golf and Country Club, will serve as an open qualifier for players without an invitation.
