Church gets early start on school supplies, clothing drive

School is fast approaching, and one area church decided to get a jump start on helping families obtain the supplies they need for the upcoming school year.

Corinth Baptist Church held its sixth back to school bash on July 29, a little more than a month before the start of school. The event was fruitful, helping more than 65 families obtain school supplies and clothing for their school-aged children.

The church received donations from members of the congregation all year round. Participants received tickets for each child they brought to the church on Saturday so each student could receive free school supplies.

Participants not only received school supplies, book bags, clothes but they received a bible. There was no limit on how many clothes you could get. The clothes were sectioned off, by men, women, kids and infants at Corinth Baptist Church.

"It's not just a free for all, there's a list that schools have provided us so you get one of each item off your list," said volunteer Laurie Patterson.

Families can also take advantage of the upcoming Aug. 4-6 tax free weekend in Virginia. The state holds the event each year to eliminate tax for qualifying school supplies, clothing and footwear.
