Williamsburg resident develops prototype for modified pickup truck

When Ford’s Colony resident Don Brannon moved to Williamsburg in 1997 with plans to build his own home, he looked for ways to combine a cargo van with a pickup truck.

When he found such a vehicle didn’t exist, he set out to invent his own.

In the two decades that have passed, the 86-year-old has filed a patent for a new type of truck that combines aspects of a pickup with a cargo van, and has tried to market the concept to big-name auto manufacturers around the world.

He calls his concept the “NextUp,” and said his passion for the project was born out of a life-long love for working on cars.
