Runners endure wet, slippery 5K conditions

After several weeks of drought conditions, Mother Nature used last Saturday’s sixth annual Powhatan Creek Trail 5K Run as the perfect time to stage a Williamsburg “drought buster.” The day before was dry, but early Saturday morning it started to rain for the race that started and finished at Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School on Ironbound Road. The race was exclusively on the hilly but scenic out-and-back course on the Powhatan Creek Trail.

The wooden bridges crossing wetlands were at times a bit slippery, and there were lots of puddles on the bridges and asphalt, but fortunately during warmup and the race, the rain was light to moderate. Once all runners and walkers had finished...
