Fifty years after an African-American family in New Kent took the fight for school integration to the Supreme Court, residents are looking back at the historic case and its continuing impact.

More than 10 years after the Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka Supreme Court case in 1954 declared separate segregated schools unconstitutional, there was an age of "freedom of choice” in the US, where black students had to petition to attend a white school.

Despite the Brown ruling, the Supreme Court didn’t define the school desegregation process or give schools a timeline to integrate.
