The New Kent County School Board has chosen an interim superintendent while it continues its search for a permanent replacement.
The board announced March 18 that Dr. Carol Fenn has been chosen as the interim, temporary superintendent and will start April 25, according to board chairwoman Sarah Barber.
Fenn served as division superintendent for Rockingham County Public Schools for 10 years before retiring in 2017, according to Barber.
Fenn started her education career as a first- and fifth-grade reading teacher and was a principal at both elementary and middle school levels before moving into division-wide roles as a director of instruction and assistant superintendent of personnel, according to Barber.
Before going to Rockingham, Fenn served as an interim superintendent for Shendandoah County Public Schools.
Barber said the board likes Fenn’s supportive approach to assisting the division’s administration, including going around the school buildings and attending extracurricular activities.
Current superintendent David Myers has been with the division almost five years and will step down April 24 to take a role with the Virginia Department of Education.
The board hopes to have the new superintendent start on July 1, according to Barber.
A superintendent search survey was put out March 8 (deadline to comment is Thursday), and Barber said the division has received more than 337 responses.
The board has posted a superintendent search schedule on the division’s website, which includes:
» 10 a.m. April 24 second board meeting with Virginia School Board Association
» Interview applicants throughout May and announce the candidate May 23.
All meetings are the School Board office,12003 New Kent Highway, New Kent.
