Amtrak train carrying 137 passengers hits SUV in New Kent County

An Amtrak passenger train hit an SUV in New Kent County Sunday evening, according to Virginia State Police.

Virginia State Police were called to a crash involving a passenger vehicle and an Amtrak train at 6:01 p.m. in the 1400 block of Outpost Road.

A 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe pulled up to a CSX railroad crossing and stopped with the nose of the vehicle partially across the tracks, according to police.

The driver saw the train approaching, attempted to put the Tahoe in reverse but was unable to do so. The train carrying 137 passengers hit the front end of the vehicle, according to police.

No one was injured. The Tahoe driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was wearing a seat belt at the time.

No charges are expected and the crash is under investigation.
