West Point Public Schools holds spelling bee

Fifth-grader Morgan Wagner was crowned division champion of the West Point Public Schools spelling bee on Jan. 23.

Wagner won the division spelling bee by spelling “penalty” correctly, according to West Point Public Schools director of instruction Nate Leach.

The spelling bee included eight students from grades one through eight, according to a Facebook post by the Town of West Point.

The spelling bee was judged by Vice Mayor Deborah Ball, School Board chairman Paul Diggs, town manager John Edwards and Laura Shreaves, according to the post.

Morgan will compete in the Richmond Times-Dispatch Regional Spelling Bee against other students from local divisions at 1 p.m. March 9, according to Nate Leach.

The grade level winners:

First grade: Oscar Anderson

Second grade: Kendall Hylton

Third grade and division runner-up: Olivia Clouting

Fourth grade: Allison Tober

Fifth grade and division champion: Morgan Wagner

Sixth grade: Prince Mori

Seventh grade: Joseph Campbell

Eighth grade: Cassidy Heidelberg
