Sounds of Summer fills Yorktown with music

If you want to take in some tunes with a river view, the Sounds of Summer concert series is for you.

Sounds of Summer is a concert series with bands playing music ranging from Motown to rhythm and blues. The series combines talented musical acts with a family-friendly atmosphere in Yorktown.

“You haven’t experienced a perfect summer concert until you’ve attended Sounds of Summer. From the talent on stage to the community feel to the cool breeze rolling in off the river — it’s the perfect venue for live music,” said Kristi Olsen-Hayes, York tourism development manager.

In June, Sounds of Summer brings music every Thursday. Slapnation, a beach music outfit, takes to the stage June 7. Rock group Vinyl Headlights plays June 14. The Main Event Band will show off its rhythm and blues chops June 21 and the Right On Band caps the month with Motown songs June 28.

The series continues into August, with bands taking the stage most Thursdays until the final concert on Aug. 2.

Concert goers should arrive early to claim their spots with lawn chairs or blankets. Food vendors will be at each concert. There will also be a dance floor, Olsen-Hayes said.

“It stays full almost the entire time. You’ll see every age from toddlers to seniors swinging and swaying to the music,” Olsen-Hayes said.
